IT organizations are afflicted by a fundamental, ongoing conflict between the development and operations teams; they have blatantly defined objectives with competing purposes.
Agile Teams — deliver changes swiftly to stay up with business demands.
Operations — control the flow of modifications to stabilise business’s operating solutions.
Security teams — implement procedures to stop modifications from introducing vulnerabilities that might lead to breaches.
A new process assembly line, or “software factory,” is necessary to keep up with demand. It must unify teams, speed up delivery, and improve the quality, security, and stability of solutions. Only then the demands of teams and consumers can be efficiently and predictably fulfilled.
Unfortunately, most IT businesses have processes that are designed to limit rather than allow frequent changes to operational systems. DevOps implies this shift in “how we build,” just like Agile represents a shift in “how we work”. The key to converting traditional or outdated development life cycles into continuous delivery is leveraging DevOps to bring in a new manner of developing digitally enabled products.
Why DevOps?
DevOps is a mindset, culture, and set of technical practices needed to effectively develop and run the solution.
DevSecOps is a concept that highlights the significance of appropriate information security measures in the quest of continuous delivery. It has become a well-known phrase that prevents any chance of security becoming an afterthought because the original definition of DevOps which didn’t explicitly include security as a top-level priority. Security cannot be enforced through inspection; rather, it must be built into the solution throughout each iteration. Each “Agile Release Train” is staffed with the security, compliance, quality assurance (QA), testing, and verification and validation (V&V) expertise needed to develop and deploy the solution. In order to provide early feedback, the ARTs evaluate the existing solution’s feasibility as well as its advancement in terms of security, quality, and compliance with each increment. Additionally, specifications are developed in small batches and at an early stage, allowing for quicker decision-making input as well as the chance for ongoing review and evaluation. SAFe always includes security as part of DevOps.
The successful application of DevOps to value streams leads to CDPs. Businesses must deploy features more quickly than ever before to be competitive. However, that’s not the only objective, but learning. Enterprises must continually create, measure, and learn to improve digital solutions that swiftly draw in and retain customers since features have no value until they are released. Fundamentally, DevOps is a way of thinking that directs actions and choices all along the value stream.
This philosophy is embodied by SAFe’s CALMR approach to DevOps, which is the focal point of the image above and penetrates every part of the CDP. Solutions evolve and are sustained by DevOps technical skills, techniques, and tools.
